Mr. Preston Eugene ‘Gene’ Brown was born on October 18, 1928 in Mitchell County, Georgia.  He was the first born child of Frankie Eugenia Posey and William Preston Brown.

The family farmed in south Georgia. Preston grew up helping his parents farm.  He was moved around quite a bit in his young life.  He attended nine schools.  He helped his father farm until, at the age of 20, he married Ella Mae Duke, from Hartsfield, Georgia and had a child, Martha Jean.

When Preston was 23, he decided he had enough of the farming business and the family moved to Albany, Georgia.  Preston made a living building homes, commercial swimming pools, and generally whatever needed to be built.  He moonlighted in his backyard for years building custom cabinets for homes.

He owned his own construction companies and drew plans for the home he built.  He has supervised work on multi-million dollar water and waste water treatment facilities.  Some of the localities he did this work were…Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

His wife Ella Mae passed away and he married Ethel Hull of Jacksonville, Florida.  She to passed away in 2001.  He has resided in Vernon, Florida across the street from his daughter, Martha, and son-in-law David Soderberg since January 2002.  He has two granddaughters, Allison Rinaldi and Shelly Soderberg, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico and has two great-grandchildren, Logan and Bethany Fikes.  Among his hobbies were guitar picking, gut-bucket playing, and the comedian in a small band.  He is an avid reader, movie watcher and TVaholic.  He can tell funny stories with the best of them, and most are even true!

Some of his stories as he looks back on his childhood are about how poor his family was.  He played ball by himself with a tobacco stick and used rocks for balls; rode a bicycle on a fence post for thousands of miles; painted rocks to hunt for Easter eggs.

Preston can entertain you for a few minutes or a few hours, depending on how much time you have to listen.  Preston has two brothers, Clifford and wife, Olene of Combs, Texas, who is a Baptist missionary and Johnny Mack, of Perry, Florida who is a Forester.  Preston moved onto the third floor at Northwest Florida Community Hospital in the spring of 2009.

Jon Allen Haines, husband, father and educator, passed on November 18th, 2009. He uncomplainingly and courageously fought the good fight with the terrible disease of lung cancer. Visitation was Friday, November 20th and funeral services were Saturday November 21st.  Both services were held at Peel Funeral Home.

Jon was born on Nov. 6, 1946, in Lafayette, IN to Foster and Joanne Young Haines, who resided in Delphi, IN.  He attended Pittsburg, Indiana Grade School, Ft Myers Junior High and was a 1964 graduate of Fort Myers High School.  He also attended Edison Community College and later graduated from The University of West Florida in 1970.  It was there he met the love of his life, Olivia Hammack Haines.  They were married on June 1, 1969, at Hinson’s Cross Roads.

In 1971, they returned to the Holmes/Washington area where he was an educator at Bonifay Elementary for 23 years.  Many of his students and colleagues remember him for his kindness and patience in the classroom, his model-railroading, the science experiments, the productions, such as Babes in Toyland, the BES Morning Show and his introduction of computers into the classroom.  When the time came in 1994 to leave the classroom, he couldn’t leave the educational system.  It was there he began the second stage of his career at PAEC (Panhandle Area Education Consortium).  He spent his time there as a technology consultant and in media productions.  As part of his work there, he recently received a 2009 Classic Telly Award for his documentary, Veteran’s Day:  Honoring our Heritage.  Over the years he had a wide variety of jobs and interests on the side, some of the most memorable being Chimney Sweep, Scout Master and Videographer.  Regardless of what he was doing, it was never “just a job” and was done with sincerity and humility.

Jon leaves behind him his most treasured possession, his family. He and his wife Olivia were married for 40 years and were the parents of Marcy Cunningham of Atlanta, GA, and Deanna Haines of Vernon.  Jon also cared greatly for his son-n-law, Jeff, husband to Marcy.  Very near to his heart, was his large family.   Jon's father, Foster, passed away in 2005 and his mother Joanne now resides in Jacksonville, FL. Jon leaves two brothers, Gary with wife Judy, Patrick, two sisters, Janet with husband Mark, and Nancy with husband Carter, three adoring aunts, Roberta Shaver, Ermina Williams, and Frances Mansfield, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.  To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.
