Will They Run Again? Vernon Elections Coming Up!
There will be four seats up for grabs on the Vernon City Council in the March 9th election.
Tuesday February 9th, 2010

"No" "Undecided" "Yes"
Stating that she would not seek re-election, Councilwoman Narvel Armstrong said, "Thirty-two years is enough, but I'll be at the meetings."
Former Councilman John Hawkins (shown at the right) turned in his resignation from the council earlier this month, stating his decision was based on his wife applying for the Vernon Deputy Clerk's position. (She was hired during the Feb. 8th meeting).
In his letter Hawkins said, "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Vernon and I hope to serve them again in the future."
The council decided the seat that was occupied by Hawkins would also be on the March 9th election. The fourth runner-up on the ballot will fill the one year left on Hawkins' term.
Qualifying for the March election will run Feb. 16th - 19th.
In other business at their Feb. 8th meeting council members took the following action:
* Paid bills
* Removed Shawn Sanders from the fire department checking account and added Brent Gibson.
* Mayor Al Mani reported it will cost the city about $2,500 for a culvert to repair Jackson Street where it was under washed. He said the county will help with the repair work.
* Brent Gibson reported the fire department will need to spend approximately $1,300 to replace the oil pump on the rescue truck. He said if the oil pump doesn't correct the problem, a new motor would cost about $11,000 and he wasn't sure that would be cost effective.
* Approved a request from Bob Wells of the Vernon Historical Society to place about one-third of a log cabin in the Historical Society Museum in City Hall. He said the wood in the cabin would be treated for termites.
* Voted to continue the contract with the recreation director until around July 12, 2010.
* Approved Resolution No. 1087 applying for grant funds for construction of a waste water facility.
* Approved having B&W Consulting Engineers apply for grant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce energy costs in the City Hall.
